Accreditation Committee

The Accreditation and Program Administrators Committee is actively working to build consensus around a set of core accreditation criteria for academic global surgery programs. Once we have reached consensus on the accreditation criteria both within our committee and from the broader organization of AAGS, the institutional representatives council and the community, we will develop an accreditation process for programs interested in demonstrating their commitment to these core criteria. We hope the accreditation criteria and process will help establish, promote, and maintain best practices for academic global surgery, protect vulnerable parties in global surgery, and bolster the work of accredited programs. We welcome the input of and feedback from all AAGS members in this important process.

Why does the AAGS want to promote accreditation?

  • Establish/maintain/promote best practices for academic global surgery

  • Protect vulnerable parties in global surgery

  • Benefit for global surgery programs

Why would a program want to be accredited by AAGS?

  • Formal accreditation may increase legitimacy in the eyes of sponsoring institutions, funding sources, governments/MOHs, etc…

  • Roadmap for program development and quality improvement

  • Identification as a reliable program for trainees or collaborators
